1.) Make note of potential places
Consider the places that you’d love to go, the places that the thought of it makes you feel uncomfortable, and others that you always dreamed of going.

2.)Check requirements and restrictions
Do you need a visa for you destination? Are there travel restrictions? Check if there are not major closures on the time of the year that you want to go, due to local holidays or protests. It can be hard to travel when many local parks or tourist areas can be impacted.

3.) Set two types of budget
A total budget and a daily budget. The total budget is the budget for the entire trip, including airfare, accommodations, food and everything else. The daily budget should include the maximum amount that you can spend each day during the trip.

4.) Book activities in advance
Many attractions may come with a discount if purchased in advance, and they might also require advanced booking. Make a list of the places you want to go and see if you need to book in advance. While at it, check for any student discounts.

5.) Make sure your passport is up-to-date; Make sure you have travel insurance
Many countries will not allow you to enter if your passport is within six months of expiration. If you’re traveling to a domestic destination, make sure your state ID is also current. Also, make sure to look into different types of insurance, such as travel health, baggage, cancellation and medical evacuation insurance.

6.) Read about the culture itself, including what to do and not do
Many of the things that you do where you are can be disrespectful elsewhere. Have some sensibility and learn how to adapt to the environment you will be going to.

7.) Be wise when packing
Do not overpack, as you’re likely to bring items back. Be aware of the baggage restrictions of your airline.

8.) Notify your bank, your close friends and phone company
Place a travel notice at your bank so you do not have problems using your debit or credit cards abroad. Check the fees as well. Notify your phone company and check the pricing of international roaming usage. Some companies, such as T-Mobile, have perks for travelers and allow you to use data and free texting abroad if you have an eligible plan.

9.) Take it all in 
Take time to explore all you can, the best way possible. Don’t be restrictive, leave your judgements in your past and experience it for yourself.

10.) Collect pieces and write away
Have a diary and write a sentence every day, stating the highlight or the feelings of your day. Take something, buy a local item, that you can bring it home and recall the trip later.

11.) Ponder
Reflect on your experiences and all that have happened. You will have a lot more time now to think and be able to recall things much better right after the trip.
